Aora Bot is source-available under the tiered Aora Bot License. Eligible individuals and organisations may use it free of charge, including for commercial purposes; other organisations need a commercial license to use it in a live product. This page summarises the license; the license text prevails.

    Free use

Users who meet any one of these conditions may use Aora Bot free of charge, including for commercial purposes:

    UserCondition
Individuals and independent developersUsing it in their own name, including in their own products
Students, teachers and schoolsFor teaching, learning and research
Non-profitsIncluding charitable projects and community groups
Open-source projectsPublishing all of their source code and not operating for profit
Teams of up to 3Full-time, part-time and long-term contracted staff, 3 in total

Free users may build Aora Bot into websites, apps, games and hardware devices, modify it, and distribute it with their products.

When a product is built for someone else, eligibility is decided by the party that ultimately owns or operates it. For example, a freelancer building a project for a 50-person company needs that company to hold a commercial license.

    Credit

When a free user publicly releases or launches a product that uses Aora Bot, it must credit Aora Bot in any one of these places:

    • The product's About, Credits, Help or settings page
    • The website footer
    • The product description in an app store, a plugin marketplace or on the project's homepage
    • The product's README, documentation or third-party license list
    • For a product that cannot carry a link, such as a hardware device, offline software or a game: its manual, packaging, end credits or staff list, with the full URL written out

The credit must include the words "Aora Bot" and link to the GitHub repository; once an official website launches, it may link there instead. It need not appear next to the characters. For example:

    Powered by <a href="https://github.com/sam70361/aora-bot">Aora Bot</a>

Personal use, learning and research, internal testing and projects not yet publicly released need no credit. Organisations holding a commercial license may omit it.

    Commercial license

Organisations that meet none of the conditions above, such as companies of more than 3 people, need a commercial license to use Aora Bot in a live product or service. Before then, evaluation, internal testing and prototyping are free of charge.

Commercial licenses are offered as a yearly subscription or as a perpetual license for a version, with scope, term and fee agreed case by case. The general terms are in LICENSE-COMMERCIAL.md. To discuss a license, email 1251579308@qq.com or get in touch on WeChat through the Sponsor page.

The template below may help when you get in touch. It is a guide only: you need not complete every field, and the company's size and intended use are enough to begin:

    Restrictions

The following restrictions apply to all users, commercial licensees included, unless otherwise agreed in writing:

    • Selling, renting or charging for the engine or the characters as a product of their own, for example as a component library, template, UI kit, source bundle, SDK or plugin.
    • Offering a hosted service or API whose main value is Aora Bot, such as a character, avatar or animated-expression service.
    • Selling the characters as goods of their own, including stickers, sticker packs, merchandise, prints and digital collectibles, or selling exported images, animations and asset packs on their own.
    • Registering a character's name or appearance as a trademark, or claiming copyright in it.
    • Training or fine-tuning AI models that generate characters on the character designs.
    • Removing or altering the copyright and license notices in the source.

Using a character as an avatar, assistant or mascot in your own product is not subject to these restrictions.
